Gap between government and private wages proves government is out of control

Originally published 10/17/06

The Bureau of Economic Analysis reported in August that federal civil servants receive twice as much in wages and benefits as the rest of us. Paul Jacob has written a column about this atrocity, concluding that "the federal government has escaped popular control, and is increasingly run not for the benefit of the people, but for the benefit of the people in government." Here's the link.

This is true for all levels of government. Never forget - as I won't - that Newark city workers make $52.88 per hour to trim brush. And here's that link.

  1. If the "government" is run by those who work for it any any level, as you imply, then how come so many jobs are being outsourced? Perhaps you think the average Joes displaced by Halliburton and the like get kick-backs from Halliburtona?

Please explain how come the guy earning $52+ per hour working for the city of Nerk is not paying taxes, as you imply. Also, I was not particularly impressed with the source you gave for the information, This Week Licking County???

  2. Who ever said the guy wasn't paying taxes?

As for impressing you with my sources, who ever said I should care about that? But FYI, This Week Licking County is a Columbus Dispatch gig.

As for the first graf, I don't understand where you're coming from or what you're reading into what I wrote. Maybe you should read it again.

  3. I used to have a friend who thinks like you. Her name was Tammy. Is your name Tammy?

  4. Heck, no. Tammy is a much different generation. What you said was, "I doubt whether any taxpayers are making $52.88 an hour clearing brush..." That implies that the guy clearing the brush for that salary is not paying taxes.

The first "graf"--is that kidspeak for paragraph?--refers to the way so many people confuse "the government" with its civil service workers. My own brother once commented on a person who answered a vets affairs phone line--"and for that they pay her $80,000 a year"--egad. At that time, the GS-3 jobs such as she had were paying about $11,300.

I don't know where this envy of government workers comes from. But it's old, really old. The greater Newark community benefitted well from the Air Base, and DCSC (now DCSS) is another boon to this area. Unless you want us to go back to a farming economy?
