Diebold talking the right talk

Revised 11:15 am to correct "bipartisan" to "non-partisan"
Bob Diebold, who squeaked by Bruce Bain in the mayoral election this week, is under the microscope and on two points, at least, he's talking the right talk.

- City bonding (which is to say tax money) as part of the deal to persuade the Columbus Crew to practice in Newark is out. “I don’t want us to carry any debt,” he said in an Advocate report. “We can do whatever we can to help them, but we could borrow money and the Crew could be sold to another city. We have to think of Newark.”

- A more non-partisan atmosphere in city government. In another Advocate item he was quoted as saying: “I think the Republicans know I’m not going to be unfair to the Democrats,” he said. “I am critical of government and I will remain critical of government. It is by and for the people. If I make mistakes, people will usually tell me and I will listen. You learn more from your opponents than you learn from your friends.”

Good beginning.
