Newark's new police chief, Steven Sarver, sounds like a step forward and upward, at least in the Advocate's interview with him.
Key points:
• He hopes to improve the police department's marketing to make it more accessible for residents.
• He said only when a strong relationship exists will residents feel responsible for reporting crimes.
• Part of creating a relationship with residents will include block-watch programs and citizen police academies.
• Kathleen Barch, city safety director, said Sarver was chosen for his enthusiasm, education, experience and vision.
• "I am looking forward to working with him," Zellner [acting police chief] said. "He certainly has a great personality ..."
And all that sounds like good news for Newark. Maybe our already-good police department will move up to a new level.
