Advocate promotes racial victimization mentality

Advocate readers got a textbook-case view of what keeps local racism alive, if indeed it is. Two reports in recent days created the impression that minorities are being treated unfairly in the hiring practices of local schools and governments.

One, entitled School districts struggle to attract minority applicants, failed to explain why they should want to do this, or whether anybody saw this as a problem.

The other was entitled Some wonder why number of minority government employees isn't higher but failed to explain exactly who wondered and why.

So let me guess. It was an Advocate reporter, editor, or administrator who wondered. That person is a racist.

The resulting articles were unnecessary waste of news-page space, as well as reporters' and readers' time. Worse, they promoted, if only by implication, the racial victimization mentality that has long been encouraged by mainstream media.

It is past time when people might be able to stop noticing skin color, if only the government and the media would shut up about it.
