On the outside of the envelope were these worrisome words:
"IMPORTANT: THE ENCLOSED ACCOUNT NOTICE IS SUBJECT TO EXPRIATION ON DUE DATE STATED INSIDE."
"FINAL NOTICE"
Inside, at the top of the page in biggest, boldest letters:
"FINAL NOTICE FOR THE HUMPHREY ACCOUNT"
Under that: "12/31/07 FINAL DEADLINE"
And in small print close by: "Discount rates expire"
Then - the meat:
"THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO RENEW THE HUMPHREY ACCOUNT AND GIVE GIFT SUBSCRIPTIONS AT THE LOWEST RATES AVAILABLE"
This is trickery from some freakin' pulp publisher, right?
No. This is the pillar of all that's sacred to consumers who try not to get ripped off by shysters, those who sell "deals" using trick words and half-truths.
This comes from the magazine that prides itself on being able each month to use its inside back page to slap around merchants who use dishonest ads and gimmicks to fool consumers.
This mailing came from Consumer Reports.

Bas bleu speaking. As you can see, if you even read this, I only visit occasionally. This post is truly fit for their back page. I have never trusted them since my husband did a detailed comparison of their car ratings and showed me absolutely that they cheated on them to boost brands they are supposed to prefer.
ReplyDeleteI always read comments. Always. And I'm always grateful for those which are in agreement with whatever I say.
