The world was watching - waiting for a not-since-30-years-ago Triple Crown win at Belmont Stakes. Big Brown was the horse and everyone was psyched.
Big Brown couldn't do a repeat. Kent Desormeaux, the jockey, read Big Brown's signals and knew his horse wouldn't win. He didn't beat him nor urge him to show up in the contenders - not top nor middle nor any. Instead, he pulled up Big Brown and allowed him to ease back to last-place finish. "Something was wrong, I took care of him."
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is one of the finest displays of sportsmanship you'll ever see in a horse race - or in any sports event.
Called the jockey with horse sense in the Washington Post, you can read more about how rare this is at this link.
